Clinical Features of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
Gestational diabeted mellitus(GDM) is defined as glucose intolerance of variable severity with onset or first recognition pregnancy, but does not exclude the possibility that the glucose intolerance may have antedated the pregnancy.
This study was done to investigate the clinical features of 67 GDM patients. There was significant correlation between HbA1c, neonatal birth weight and fasting plasma glucose level at 100gm-OGTT. 19(28.3%) of the total GMD patients(67) showed
impaired
glucose tolerance(IGT) and 6 (9.6%) overt D.M. The presence of persistent CHO metabolic disturbance depended on the age and the ideal body wt. (IBW) of the pregnant women.
In this study, we have found that all pregnant woman should be screened for glucose intolerance and evaluated using the definitive diagnostic test(100gm-OGTT etc.) regardless of the high risk factors which effect the newborn(e.g. fasting plasm
glucose,
HbA1c). Also, it is important that the existence of persistent CHO metabolic disturbance is confirmed by postpartum follow-up test. In addition to this, further study on other predictive factors are required.
